Paris is known as the “City of Lights.” The brilliance many associate with France’s capital city returns to Scheherazade Jewelers on Friday, December 12 and Saturday, December 13 for a two-day trunk featuring French jewelry designer Alwand Vahan. Known for artfully combining sterling silver and yellow gold, Vahan will bring a number of existing collection as well as the designer’s new Lattice Collection.
From Paris to America
Sacha Der Calousdian was born in southern France and raised in Paris. Before he established Vahan in 1968, two generations of designers came before him. Sacha’s grandfather Manasse started his own luxury jewelry company in the late 1800’s. That business was later taken over by Sacha’s father Arsene Der Calousdian in the 1930s.
As a boy Sacha’s curious nature lead to the exploration and eventual discoveries of his father’s and grandfather’s chosen calling. And, as a young man youthful inquisitiveness turned in to true passion for jewelry design. He then attended La Chambre Syndicale de la Bijouterie, one of Paris’ most respected jewelry design schools. But his schooling wasn’t just about design. Sacha explored a number of other fields of interest including architecture, fashion, painting, sculpting, vintage car restoration and exotic travel.
During the 1950’s to the 1960’s, Sacha designed jewelry for jewelry fashion house Hermès and jewelry designer David Webb. After two decades of designing jewelry for other firms, Sacha started Alwand Vahan Jewelry in 1968. In 1973, Sacha’s wife Nathalie joined the company serving as the COO handling customer relations. And, in 2009, Vahan Jewelry celebrated the addition of a fourth generation in the Der Calousdian tradition of design. An artist from a very young age like his father, Sacha’s eldest son Greg joined the company establishing six generations of jewelry making.
Introducing the Lattice Collection
A lot happens on family vacations. For Greg Der Calousdian and his family a Vahan Jewelry collection was created during a vacation to the Italian Amalfi Coast. During the trip, his family visited Villa Cimbrone which sits high up on the cliffs of Ravello. This part of Italy is a mixture of Italian and English styled gardens surrounding a breathtaking villa.
One day, as Greg and his wife took a slow walk through the lush green gardens and were in “utter awe,” explains Greg. “We came across this gorgeous stone and iron structure buried in the back gardens. This ancient pergola, which sat there for centuries flanked by gently swaying cypress trees and pines, immediately drew me in.”
Greg and his wife walked through the ancient structure and saw the sun cast the silhouettes of the iron curly cues on their faces. Blinded by the light, Greg paused for a moment. “The warm sensation of creativity laced with inspiration took center stage in my mind’s eye, as I could see a domed lattice-like structure that could cast light in all directions, while also letting air and light through.
Like the Italian pergola, I wanted a concept that could stand the test of time yet remain timelessly pretty to its onlookers,” Greg said of the sunlit moments of inspiration for designer’s new jewelry collection.
Vahan Jewelry and Today’s Trends
Vahan Jewelry speaks to many of today’s trends, especially the stacking trend. Based on a patented process, Vahan’s bracelets are as durable as they are beautiful. This makes wearing a large single bracelet or several stacking bracelets easy for a variety of looks. Available in 4mm, 6mm, 8mm and 12mm sizes, open-end or one-touch clasp bracelet designs make it effortless to accessorize any outfit taking busy women from work to play all in one day.
Whether it’s a signature bangle, ring, necklace or pair of earrings, Vahan combines sterling silver with 14-karat yellow gold as part of the designer’s signature look. No matter the age, many women have white and yellow gold jewelry in their jewelry collections. Often women accessorize with the one-color approach. That’s changed in recent years as women combine both colors of precious metals for dressing up for work or play. Vahan Jewelry’s two-tone designs can be the bonding visual that ties multiple pieces of silver, white gold and yellow gold for a fabulous ensemble.
On the topic of color, Vahan Jewelry’s recent Halo Collection brings together an eclectic range of color combinations. From the rich, deep blues of London Blue Topaz to the lush greens of peridot, the Halo Collection features a cornucopia of colors. Vahan Jewelry’s Bamboo Collection lets silver’s intrinsic luster shine through with high polished designs that mimics one of nature’s fasting growing renewable resource.
