If your watch makes you feel like you’re doing time and not telling it, perhaps it’s time to get a new timepiece. From October 17 to 18, Scheherazade Jewelers will host its third annual Art of Time watch trunk show event. In addition to special pricing, representatives from our four leading watch brands will be on hand. These watch experts bring much to our Galleria jewelry store including expanded watch collections. Equally important, they have a wealth of knowledge on watches, collecting watches and, of course, watch trends.
Top Five Trends from Baselworld 2013
The Baselworld Show is THE premier watch show in the world. Watch trends that emerged from this year’s show include:
> Navy blue is the color of choice for many leading watchmakers, be it straps or dials.
> GMT watches are in. Intended for professionals that use the 24-hour clock, you don’t have to be in the Army or an astronaut to appreciate the timezone features of a GMT watch.
> Rose gold and matching steel straps are also big trends for 2013 and beyond. The precious metal’s warm glow appeals to those overexposed to white stainless or yellow gold watch bracelets.
> Gray-on-gray is a seamless look for some watchmakers as a black dial and case have a similar dark gray color. Dark gray dials complementing a black leather wristband are also part of this color trend.
> Orange accents are the final identifiable trend for watch brands for this year. Gray and black dials have small hints of eye-catching orange.
Maurice Lacroix: With watchmaking roots dating back to the late 1890’s, this Swiss watch company was founded in 1976. Four short years later the company stopped making third-party watches focusing exclusively on their emerging brand. Over the next decade, Maurice Lacroix would begin its rocket-like ascension to the top, to become the leading quality Swiss watch brand it is today with their current “Your Time is Now” campaign. Also, in 2006, Maurice Lacroix introduced their first full in-house movement – the ML106 based “Masterpiece Le Chronographe.” Since then, Maurice Lacroix has introduced a number of movements including an automatic movement in 2011 and another new movement at this year’s Baselworld Show, for a total of 12 in-house movements.
Hamilton: Born in the same period of its Swiss counterparts, Hamilton is an American watchmaker that got its start in the early 1890’s in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Later Hamilton’s success would grow in tandem with the advancement of America’s railroad. Early in the company’s history Hamilton’s Broadway Limited became known as the “watch of railroad accuracy.” Thanks to various acquisitions and mergers throughout the company’s history, and that of other watchmakers, today Hamilton watches combine the strong spirit of America with the precision of Swiss movements for watches of unrivaled quality.
A Fun Fact About Watches: Many wonder when time started. Easy. November 18, 1883. That’s when the United States and Canadian railroads instituted standard time zones. The rapid growth of the watch industry is linked to this historic standardization.
