Collectible Colored Gemstones
Today, precious color gemstones are some of the most sought after collectibles in the world and, although many jewelry enthusiasts believe gem-quality diamonds are the finest, there are several colored gemstones that are far more rare than diamonds. Black Opal, for instance, is so rare that per carat prices have reached $20,000. “Royal One,” a 306-carat black opal, is known to have sold for $3 million.
Alexandrite boasts an extraordinary single gemstone that exhibits two distinct colors – green in natural sunlight and red in incandescent light. Per carat prices for this unique alexandrite have reached an astounding $1,000,000 per carat.
Red Beryl Crystals, often called “Red Emeralds,” are indigenous only to the mountains of Utah. This brilliant gemstone is so rare that just one is found for every 150,000 diamonds. Per carat prices for red beryl have climbed to $50,000.
The neon blue Brazilian Paraiba Tourmaline is found mainly is small sizes of one to two carats and is valued at $16,000 per carat. This per caret price goes up exponentially in sizes of three carats and larger.
The Rarity of the Classic Colors
From Montana to Myanmar, sapphires have been discovered in many areas throughout the world, but only a handful of sources are known to produce the world’s finest. The scarcest of all – Kashmir Sapphires – have been found at elevations of 15,000 feet and higher in the northwest Himalayas. Mining these rare treasures along this dangerous mountainous terrain demands a per carat price of $50,000.
Ruby and sapphire come from the same family of gemstones and, although ruby is mined in most regions of the world, Myanmar (Burma) rubies are the most prized. The signature “pigeon’s blood” rubies from Mogok, Burma are exceptionally rare. Per carat prices for these rubies has reached up to $425,000 per carat.
A collection of precious gemstones wouldn’t be complete without the classic emerald. This distinctive, cherished jewel is mined in Brazil and Zambia, but Colombian emeralds are the most coveted because of their signature lush green color.
In 2011, when Christie’s sold Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry, her emeralds realized historic per carat prices. At auction, a 23.46-carat Colombian emerald sold for $6.6 million, a mere $280,000 per carat.
