The nation commemorates buying local on November 29 with Small Business Saturday. But Scheherazade Jewelers is celebrating the spirit of this day a little early with the jewelry store’s Meet the Designer event with Killian Reider. The Minneapolis-based jewelry designer is the creative force behind KILLIAN Jewelry, a new collection of customizable and personalized jewelry.
Scheherazade customers and Galleria shoppers can meet the designer on Friday, November 14 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturday, November 15 from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM as part of the Galleria’s Holiday Open House weekend celebrations. (In advance of the Meet the Designer event Friday evening, customers are welcome to visit Scheherazade’s on the evening of Thursday, November 13 for a sneak peak at Killian’s jewelry collections.) See her many jewelry collections and learn about the inspirations behind the creations.
How It All Got Started
Killian’s design prowess goes back to her college years when she graduated from New York’s famed Fashion Institute of Technology. Her refined sense of styling influenced designs of major international clothing brands including Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. After having a hand in designing fashion, Killian decided it was time to pursue her true passion of designing fashion accessories.
In 2002, Killian and her husband pursued the idea of making bead and charm jewelry that could be customized and personalized to suit to the wearer’s tastes and lifestyles. And with that driving notion, the dynamic couple created Chamilia jewelry. Killian moved the business to Minneapolis. After a decade of building the business to become a $100 million global business, Killian sold Chamilia to world crystal leader Swarovski.
Creating Her Own Brand
After creating a hugely successful jewelry company early on in her designing career, Killian was quoted in news sources as being one-and-done with jewelry. But like a potential presidential candidate, “not at this time” has turned into “this is the time.” Last year Killian began tinkering with the basic principles of personalization and customization jewelry once again with a new concept.
Chamilia bracelets were mainly silver cables and bangles as well as leather bracelets. The new KILLIAN Jewelry Collection still offers sterling silver and leather options, but the essential building blocks for her bracelets have a bigger, bolder look. Mesh sterling silver bracelets and leather bracelets are 12mm (0.47 inches) wide. Available in a variety of lengths to accommodate wrists of all sizes, the uniform width of the bracelets allows the wearer to adorn a KILLIAN Jewelry Collection bracelet with one or a number of colorful “facettes.”
Facettes is where the personalization and customization of a bracelet design come in. From Burma to Brazil, Killian has sourced colored gemstones from around the world to offer a rainbow of color options. Mix and match colors from well-known gemstones including blue topaz, amethyst, citrine, rose and mint quartz as well as black spinel and moonstone.
The color combinations are endless from customizing likes for color to perfectly coordinating jewelry with a particular wardrobe selection. The result is a fresh, unique line of jewelry that offers women a new way to accessorize and express their individual style.
More than Just Bracelets
With her small team based in Minneapolis’ North Loop neighborhood, Killian also created a sterling silver mesh ring that can also be customized with facettes. And, coordinating colors of earrings can complete any ensemble, taking a look from a day of looking fabulous at work to being fashionable at night for any social event.
Her story isn’t just about creating fashionable, fun, customizable jewelry that defines a sense of personal styling. It’s also a Minnesota success story with hard work and determination at the heart of this entrepreneurial narrative.
Once again, Scheherazade Jewelers invites customers and Galleria shoppers to meet Killian and to see her jewelry on Friday, November 14 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Saturday, November 15 from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
