The Twin Cities have long been recognized among the most dynamic cultural centers in the nation. Now art arrives in the form of fine jewelry with the debut of Alex Soldier designs at Scheherazade Jewelers in the Galleria, Edina.
Russian-born jeweler, Alex Soldier is recognized the world over for his intricate metalwork and incomparable designs that have charmed celebrities, style experts and discerning buyers alike, who desire to own and collect his one-of-a-kind creations.
As a young boy, Alex was fascinated and showed a true talent for sculpture and woodcraft, but jewelry was the furthest thing from his mind when he earned a master’s degree in computer engineering. In an unrelated interview, Alex talked of his dreams of eventually building robots — until he met his wife, Galina, who felt his fine attention to detail and impeccable artistic talents would lend themselves perfectly to jewelry design.
That convinced him to join a jewelry plant in Russia, where he quickly rose to the position of head designer in less than a year. At the time, he was only 25 years old. In 1996, he moved to New York and established his own unique brand and has been designing there for almost 20 years.
From His Studio in Times Square
All of Alex’s pieces are crafted under a microscope by hand with his select team of artists. Coincidentally, none of his designers were formally trained in jewelry design because he doesn’t want them to have a pre-conceived notion of what jewelry design should be. Rather, he wants them to expand their imagination into the non-traditional design realm.
Alex himself spends every day at his bench, creating the most complex designs on his own. “It’s an imperative part of my art,” he says, “and I cannot exist without the creative process.”
Each design begins with a hand-carved wax model that shapes the metalwork that is the basis for the finished piece. Then, using Soldier’s own proprietary tools, textures or gemstones or a combination of both are applied to the metal in stages until his desired effect is created — making each masterpiece truly a work of art.
Imparting Creative Expression in Soldier Designs
Whether in abstract forms or realistic representations, Alex Soldier conveys a subliminal message to those who love his work. His Sunflower Series expresses the life of sunflowers and is dedicated to women who live life to the fullest.
His exquisite, whimsical Snail Collection reminds one to slow down and thoroughly enjoy life. And his colorful, pointed Asters resemble intricate fireworks that assure us that life is filled with magic and wonder.
Inspired by a Russian Folk Legend
Alex readily shares the inspiration for his craft. It is based on a Russian craftsman who devoted seven years to the carving of a flower out of malachite. Because so much time and artistry was poured into his creation, the result was a flower that appeared to have a soul of its own, even though it was carved out of stone. In Soldier’s design process, he strives to give life to his work so his final results are more art than accessory.
Winning Awards and Creating Awards
Alex Soldier’s innovative design has won him several awards from prestigious organizations and Trade Associations. His illustrious works have also been awarded as prizes to distinguished artists. One in particular —the “Triumph” award is presented annually to exceptional Russian artists in art, literature and music.
Soldier was also commissioned to create distinguished trophies, awarded by the Princess Grace Foundation, presented to emerging artists in theater, dance and film. From the original statuesque design, he also crafted smaller versions to be worn as a pin by the talented recipient.
