The weekend of Friday, November 8 will be a busy one at Scheherazade Jewelers starting with the Italian Couture Event featuring jewelry from Roberto Demeglio. And, as part of the Galleria, Scheherazade Jewelers will also be celebrating the center’s Holiday Open House this weekend.
Three Generations of Jewelry Designing
When looking at Roberto Demeglio’s jewelry a word that comes to mind is contemporary. Based on the whimsical and innovative designs of today, many would be surprised to learn that the family tradition of making jewelry started back in 1922 with Roberto’s grandfather Giuseppe who used to be the jeweler to the royal family. Since then, as the designer has said about the family tradition of making jewelry, “our DNA has not changed.”
Roberto took the company in an entirely new direction in 1984. Although Roberto works with precious metals, he has embraced new technologies to create collections of jewelry that have ushered in a new era of sophisticated jewelry creations in order to be different and unique from other jewelry designers in a global market. That task was achieved by using technology that would allow the designer to develop trademark features to his designs using materials such as carbon fiber, mesh metals, ceramic and stainless steel coils that allow his jewelry to spin, bend and twist.
Sprinkle in a lot of whimsy to design executions and you have the consummate Roberto Demeglio piece of jewelry. At the heart of Roberto’s jewelry collections is the designer’s patented stainless steel coil that has an elastic quality. It’s hard to imagine that when a metal coil is pulled and stretched that it can return to its original shape and condition, but that’s the magic behind Roberto Demeglio’s jewelry.
The Domino Collection is the designer’s signature line of jewelry, made with tiny yet durable ceramic tiles or squares. Cuff and ring designs include one square of white, yellow and rose gold set with small diamonds –- a contrasting design element that has become signature feature to the Domino Collection.
Roberto Demeglio has received five awards for his jewelry in the last five years, the most recent being the Winner of “Platinum Design Awards” – Basel 2012. Last year he also introduced the Margherita Collection. The line of jewelry sprung from a piece he created for his wife Simona. The ring design featured a daisy at the top, “the simplest of all flowers,” according to the designer, “but also the most significant symbol of love.” Although a serious and heart-felt inspiration, it wouldn’t be a Roberto Demeglio design without a bit of whimsy, which is why the daisy on each Margherita Collection ring spins like a top.
This Year Roberto Demeglio introduced the Harlequin Collection. What little squares are to the Domino Collection, diamond shapes are to the Harlequin Collection. Other Roberto Demeglio collections include Giaconda, Giotto, Cashmere, Anaconda, Spyros, Musa, Gemma, Deco, Joy, and Cocktail.
The Roberto Demeglio Customer
Roberto Demeglio describes women that like his jewelry as those with a penchant for high fashion defined by a simple and elegant look. “I design for the woman that wants to wear a masterpiece of design, quality and innovation,” Roberto Demeglio, INDESIGN magazine, June 2012.
