Similar to many American success chronicles, the SUNA Bros, Inc.’s story starts in Europe. Brothers and company founders Kenneth and Joel Suna brought their Old World standards of excellence and creativity to America more than 70 years ago and called New York home. SUNA Bros, Inc. brings this tradition of excellence to Scheherazade Jewelers for a one-day trunk show on Saturday, December 28.
In the Beginning
As second-generation jewelers, Kenneth and Joel Suna established the perfect skill sets to take the next generation of jewelry making to greater standards of excellence with their early training as diamond setters, bench jewelers and gemology. Studying under the masters of their time, the Suna brothers developed a keen understanding of quality jewelry rooted in uncompromising artisanship and creativity.
And, like other European-trained jewelers early in the early 20th Century, the Suna brothers were also experts at working with platinum, a skill their American counterparts had not yet started or were in the early developmental phases. Factor in their in-depth knowledge of fine gems, and the Suna brothers had a distinct advantage over other jewelry makers in the company’s formative years.
Aron and Jonathan Suna represent the third generation of jewelry designing and making. New generations usher in new ways of managing the family business. Aron and Jonathan have introduced many new jewelry-making technologies such as the use of laser welders and 3-D model rendering software.
Old World Meets New Technology
But even with modern technology, every SUNA Bros design starts the same way it has for nearly a century of creating jewelry – using a pencil and gouache. Designs are eventually rendered in today’s 3-D jewelry-making software. Many pieces are first modeled in wax to make sure the details of each design is accurately represented in the final fabrication. After a wax model is made designs are then done in silver to determine the durability of each piece of the jewelry’s design features in each of the precious metals, including 18-karat gold and platinum.
Inspired by sources from nature to architecture, SUNA Bros sees the ordinary and make it extraordinary in jewelry designs with excruciating attention to detail. Designing to scale, with balance and symmetry as guiding principles, is what makes SUNA Bros, Inc. jewelry so special.
That and every possible creative possibility is explored when fabricating jewelry, such as making the functional fashionable. Clasps for most jewelry makers simply attach one end of the piece of jewelry to another. At SUNA Bros, Inc. clasps are created to best complement each piece of jewelry making the clasp an integral part of each jewelry design.
For earrings, Old World craftsmanship and today’s jewelry-making technology come together to make exacting matches so that each earring mirrors the other for unrivaled balance and symmetry.
Quality Components Make Fine Jewelry
The building blocks of every fine piece of jewelry are artfully alloyed precious metals and fine colored stones and diamonds. With gemology (the study of gemstones) a vital part of SUNA Bros, Inc.’s lengthy history in jewelry making, the finest gemstones are at the heart of every jewelry creation.
Chief among the finest gemstones set in jewelry created by SUNA Bros, Inc. are pink diamonds sourced Australia’s Argyle Diamond Mines. Located in East Kimberly Australia, the Argyle Diamond Mine is the world’s largest commercial source for natural pink diamonds. These pink diamonds come in a variety of colors including apricot, purplish-pink, true pink and the rarest of fancy colored diamonds red.
SUNA Bros, Inc. not only works with fine pink diamonds but top quality white diamonds, which give brilliance and enduring beauty to the wedding bands and engagements rings the company has created and crafted for more than 70 years. Equally important is selecting only top-grade colored stones. From precious rubies, sapphires and emeralds to aquamarines and opals, colored stones of uncompromising quality are the foundation of every piece of jewelry that receives the SUAN Bros, Inc. stamp.
